This article deals with the study of metaphors in the scientific popular discourse about nature and environment in French and in Italian. In this type of discourse, metaphor facilitates the passage from the discourse-expression of a specialist to the discourse-formulation of a popular journalist (Jacobi 1985), as well as the reading-comprehension of the layman. We will first make a distinction between the scientific discourse and the scientific popular discourse; then, we will study metaphor in the scientific popular discourse in a corpus taken from the sections “Nature & Environnement” et “Ambiente” (period: July-October, 2012) of the French and Italian online magazines of scientific popularization Science et Avenir and Focus. Our analyses will be based on Loffler-Laurian (1984; 1994), Knudsen (2003) and Collombat (2003) studies of metaphor, from which we will propose a linguistic study of metaphors in both languages.
