Panegyreis rivali. Emilio Paolo e Antioco IV tra tradizione macedone e melting pot tardo-ellenistico.

L'articolo esamina nel dettaglio le celebrazioni tenute dal generale romano L. Emilio Paolo ad Anfipoli nella primavera del 167 a.C., dopo la fine della terza guerra romano-macedonica, e quelle organizzate, in diretta competizione con esse, dal re Antioco IV a Dafne, probabilmente nell'estate del 166. Il confronto tra i due eventi è stabilito da Polibio (XXX 25, 1) e riguarda il livello e la frequentazione internazionale delle feste e specifici aspetti delle due celebrazioni. Viene qui discusso il modello forse costituito, per queste e per altre celebrazioni pubbliche di età ellenistica, da feste e agoni organizzati da Alessandro Magno durante la spedizione d'Asia. D'altro canto, il saggio suggerisce che un modello più antico, quello delle tradizionali feste 'nazionali' macedoni (come gli Olympia e gli Xandika), fu a sua volta seguito da Alessandro e dai suoi successori e più tardi, più o meno consapevolmente, dai generali romani.

The paper examines in detail the celebrations held by the Roman general L. Aemilius Paullus at Amphipolis in spring 167 BCE after the end of the third Macedonian war and those organized as a direct counterpart by the king Antiochus iv at Daphne, probably in summer 166 BCE. The parallel between the two events is established by Polybius (xxx 25, 1) and involves the international scale and attendance of the festivals and individual features of the two celebrations. The pattern possibly represented, for these two famous events and for other public festivals of the Hellenistic period, by festivals and games organized by Alexander the Great during the expedition in Asia is here discussed. On the other hand, the paper suggests that a more ancient pattern, that of the traditional festivals held in Macedonia on a ‘national’ scale (such as the Olympia or the Xandika), was followed by Alexander himself and his successors and eventually, more or less consciously, by the Roman generals.
