It has been 17 years since the first edition of the series of workshops "SDS" (Structural Dynamical Systems). The series has traditionally been devoted to the study of dynamical systems in a broad sense, particularly their interplay with other areas of mathematics (e.g. numerical analysis, linear algebra, control theory) as well as the applied sciences and engineering. The list of topics of the workshops has changed, and grown, over the years to keep up with the most recent research trends. Main purpose of the workshops has been essentially to bring together researchers from different fields, mainly mathematics and engineering, and give them the opportunity to discuss, in a friendly atmosphere, the topics to which each workshop has been devoted. This special issue is related to the 9 th edition of the series, which has taken place in June 14-17, 2016, in Capitolo, Monopoli, Italy. The main topics covered by this edition have been: Continuous and discontinuous dynamical systems, mathematical models in applied sciences and engineering, numerical methods for ODEs and PDEs, and fractional differential equations. The special issue is a collection of 15 works that, for the most part, reflect the outcome of scientific collaborations established, or consolidated, during the workshop. Each paper has gone through a rigorous review process to ensure it meets the highest quality standards. We hope the issue will serve as a reference for researchers within the community of dynamical systems and beyond. The special issue is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Timo Eirola, who passed away in 2016. He was a longtime friend and collaborator of many of the workshop attendees, and has himself attended the workshop in the 2003 edition. The special issue opens with an obituary written for Prof. Eirola by Prof. Luca Dieci. We wish to thank the following sponsors, whose contribution has made the workshop possible: INdAM-GNCS, CNR-IRMA, Dipartimento di Matematica - Università degli Studi di Bari, Dipartimento di Matematica e Fisica "Ennio De Giorgi" - Università del Salento, Politecnico di Bari, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Puglia. We also wish to thank the Editors in Chief of the journal Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems - B, Proff. Yuan Lou and Peter E. Kloeden, for their interest in the special issue, and the Managing Editor Xin Lu for his assistance in the preparation of the issue.
