Il saggio evidenzia aspetti e problemi legati alle attività di pirati e corsari nelle acque del Regno, soffermandosi sull’elaborazione di un sistema giuridico per la legittimazione delle prede marittime che fu timidamente abbozzato durante la seconda metà del Settecento e che trovò la sua più compiuta definizione durante il Decennio francese con il Decreto del 31 agosto 1807, istitutivo del Consiglio delle Prede Marittime, e con la legge del 12 settembre dello stesso anno, un vero e proprio codice per la guerra corsara. Il modello francese fu mantenuto in piedi dai Borbone fino alla fine del Regno.

In the crisis of the transition from the old to the new regime the corsair war in the Mediterranean intensified considerably with strong repercussions on the trade and economy of the South. The essay highlights aspects and problems related to the activities of pirates and privateers in the waters of the Kingdom, dwelling on the elaboration of a legal system for the legitimization of maritime prey that was timidly sketched during the second half of the eighteenth century and which found its most complete definition during the French Decade with the Decree of 31 August 1807, establishing the Council of Maritime Preds, and with the law of 12 September of the same year, a real code for the corsair war. The French model was kept standing by the Bourbons until the end of the Kingdom.
