Any departure from established social conventions during the 16thcentury was deemed a kind of madness. and this is all the more so when the history of women is in question. By referencing the exemplary case of Marie de Gournay, this essay will explore madness as a cultural phenomenon tied to a fear of difference, a fear of all that would fall outside established protocols, whether these be social or religious in nature.

Abstract

Any departure from established social conventions during the 16thcentury was deemed a kind of madness. and this is all the more so when the history of women is in question. By referencing the exemplary case of Marie de Gournay, this essay will explore madness as a cultural phenomenon tied to a fear of difference, a fear of all that would fall outside established protocols, whether these be social or religious in nature.
