Abstract

Health workers using radioisotopes in research laboratories have a professional exposure risk to ionizing radiations (IR). In our study we assessed the environmental and superficial contamination in 3 research laboratories ofBari University Hospital, where 3H, 32p, 14C and other radionuclides are used for analysis and research. In July and in December 2007, we performed 2 measurements in each laboratOI)'. We used a sampler automatic constant flow to evaluate environmental contamination: in all the monitored points, the values of contamination were lower than the rer;istration's levels. We used Smeartest technique about supe~ficial contamination. it allows to detect the possible contamination of swface through the rubbinr; of an appropriate substrate. At any drawing point there has been an overshooting of the inrestigation's levels and the observed a1'erage values were near to the measured background radioactivity. The obtained results, therefore, would seem to indicate a correct application of hygiene and safety standards at work in carrying out laboratory activities.
