Abstract

The cold water corals are widespread in the world’s oceans, dwelling in a depth range between the intertidal zone to abyssal plane. Contrary to the tropical species, since they generally live in cold water and in utter darkness, they don’t have symbiontic algae. Growing at very low rates, over millennia, the cold water corals have built reef-like mounds of different sizes often covered by complex three-dimensional structures providing ecological niches for a large number of species.
