The purpose of the present study was to evaluate a different approach to laboratory learning of programming languages. Information Science undergraduates (N = 60) were divided into two groups for two months. The control group received regular classroom instruction and carried out their own training activity in the laboratory. The experimental group used the CBI program in the laboratory both for learning and training in the Pascal programming language. An overall significant difference in favor of the control group was found between the groups on a performance measure (t(57) = 2.34, p = .023). The experimental group performed better on programming exercises (t(57) = -2.65, p = .010), while the control group performed better on a test of programming concepts and syntactic rules (t(57) = 4.14, p < .001).
