The article focuses on Campania, and particularly on the city of Capua, which played an important role in spreading the Christian message. The analysis takes into account the saints of Capua mentioned in the Hieronimian Martyrology. This is a source of primary importance, owing to its antiquity, and has exerted a considerable influence on various medieval liturgical documents. The article compares information from Hieronimian Martyrology with those of the so-called "historical" martyrologies and other liturgical calendars, passionaries, lives of Saints and collections of miracles. These texts are all very useful in order to understand the origin of the cult of saints. The Hieronimian Martyrology actually connects to Campania many martyrs and saints which are considered African or Bizantyne not only by some Campanian sources of IX-XI Centuries, but also by some radical exponents of the historical criticism in modern times. The article reviews both the first and the second issue on the basis of a contextual exegesis of both written and monumental sources.
